Gerry Brien

Chancellor’s Fellow and Group Leader

Gerry has an undergraduate degree in Genetics and Cell Biology from Dublin City University in Ireland. He obtained his PhD studying chromatin biochemistry and epigenetics in the laboratory of Prof. Adrian Bracken at Trinity College Dublin also in Ireland. Following this he undertook post-doctoral training in the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York; the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School in Boston in the laboratory of Prof. Scott Armstrong. This was where he began working on epigenetic regulation in childhood cancers. Now he is bringing together his expertise in the areas of chromatin biology and cancer to better understand childhood cancers and guide the development of better treatments.

Meet the team

Andrew Malcolm

Post-Doctoral Researcher

Andrew has an undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Edinburgh and a Masters in Stem Cell Biology from the University of Cambridge. He did his PhD studies in the laboratory of Dr. Peter Rugg-Gunn at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge where he worked on the epigenetic regulation of pluripotency. In the Brien lab he is working on understanding molecular mechanisms of oncogenesis in multiple childhood brain tumor types.

Anthony Doherty

Post-Doctoral Researcher

Anthony has an undergraduate degree in Neuroscience from University College Dublin where he obtained a first-class honours grade. He did his PhD studies in the Brien lab where he used small-molecule therapeutics to target underlying transcriptional vulnerabilities in childhood sarcomas. His post-doc work is continuing in this vain as he seeks to better understand how to disrupt oncogenic transcriptional programs in sarcoma.

Charlie Jones

CRUK TRACC PhD student

Charlie is currently undertaking an integrated TRACC MB-PhD programme at the University of Edinburgh. Having completed three years of her undergraduate medical degree, she is now pursuing three years of PhD research within the Brien lab. Her work focuses on understanding the biochemical assembly pathways and function of key oncogenic chromatin regulators in childhood brain tumors. Insights we hope will guide the development of future therapeutics.

Eimear Lagan

Post-Doctoral Researcher

Eimear has an undergraduate degree in Genetics from Trinity College Dublin obtaining a first-class honours grade. She did her PhD studies jointly between the Brien lab and Prof. Adrian Bracken’s lab at Trinity College Dublin where she focused on understanding disease mechanisms and identifying better therapeutic approaches in childhood brain tumors. As a post-doc she is continuing her work to better understand disease mechanisms in childhood brain tumours.
